This morning we woke up to a cool day with fog for most of the morning. Then after lunch we went for a drive on the wildlife loop in Custer State Park. It was real treat as we ran accross a wild turkey right off the bat. Then on the way to the loop we discovered a solitary bison up in the trees on the side of a hill. Once on the loop we came accross a herd of 15 antelope that had people's attention. Further down the road there was a pack of wild burros. One van had stopped and a guy got out and went to feed a burro. After that several came to the van and they opened their sliding door and were feeding three burros at once. This goes against all the park rules and can be damgerous if a burro decides it wants what is in you vehicle. However, it provideed entertainment for us and dozens of motorcycles on tour, given tat this is the week of the Sturgis bike rally. Further down the road there was a large gathering of folks up on a side dirt road so we went up to see what was going on. Once on top we had a view of hundreds of bison grazing happily away. Further on down the dirt road, which we had decided to follow, there was another group of bison headed toward the main herd. The dirt road was a treat as there were many wild flowers, rock formations and streams to see. Then on the other side of a fence line there appeared another herd of bison, only around 20 or 30 this time. All of the herds had many youngsters in them and some of what I would call teenagers also. The road wound around for several miles, we knew where it came out as I had asked a ranger at the beginning, and wound its way through a really nice horse camp. A lot different than an RV park as there were only outhouses but there were some cabins that even had air conditioning. On the way hom we saw the same solitary bison that past in the beginning and then when we were almost out of the park we came accross another solitary bison hidden amoung the trees. All in all a wonderful day.
