'How to' Stop Toilet Bowl Leak Down.

  Toilet Bowl Leak Down

Sooner or later you will have the problem of toilet bowl leak down.  This is when you cannot keep the water in the toilet bowl, it leaks on down into the black tank.  Here's what I've been doing to help solve this problem.

The equipment required is as follows.  A length of string.  I use about 2 feet of butchers string, vinyl glove, two little nut cups or disposable cups, some plumbers grease, (which you can get at Home Depot,Lowes or a hardware store) some liquid laundry soap and a toothbrush.  And since we like things in the RV to do double duty, I'll use my wife's toothbrush.

First turn off your water to the coach and make sure your water pump is turned off.  Take one of the nut cups or throwaway cups and put a little bit of liquid laundry soap in it.

Next take the about two feet of string and tie a loop which you can put around your wrist, and tie this string to the toothbrush.  Make sure it is secure.  You do not want to lose the toothbrush in the toilet.

Now step on the foot pedal and open the bow, so that all the water pressure is taken off.

Next get the toothbrush in the liquid laundry soap, and then clean though valve area gasket in the toilet. Go around several times to make sure that it is clean.

Now turn the water back on and flush the toilet several times with the valve opens so it rinses as all of the laundry detergent from the toilet seal.  Also rinse out the toothbrush.  Now turn off the water supply and release the water pressure by stepping on the toilet pedal.

Take the vinyl gloves insert your finger into one of the larger fingers of the glove.

Open up the plumbers grease and take out approximately a tablespoon of grease and put it in the nut cup. Remove glove from finger and insert toothbrush in same finger. Now take the toothbrush, which is covered with the vinyl glove and take part of the grease.

Open up the valve by stepping on the pedal, and then carefully distribute the grease around the valve seal.

Then go back and get the rest of the grease and do the same thing again operate the about two or three times.

Now turn on the water and operate the fill pedal on the toilet, fill it up about halfway, and then flush.  Make sure that the valve closes tightly.  Sometimes we find that a little help from a Big toe helps make sure that the valve is closed.  Now fill the toilet half way with water. Let set for a few hours to check for leak down.

Usually this will fix the toilet bowl leak down for maybe three to four weeks and I'll have do it again.

Throw the vinyl glove away, along with the nut caps, and then I rinse out the toothbrush and put it back.

So she will not know that it's been missed.

No actually, we have a dedicated toothbrush just for this job, and it is put into a Ziploc bag and stored underneath in one of the plastic containers with all the plumbing equipment to be used again.  I hope this has been of some help.
